I was just looking through my Charleroi route photos and found the "last
night" shot of 1721 labeled "Spring Near Mingo Falls." So it's not where I
thought it was at all.
The description of the railway in Electric Railroads #20 is not entirely
accurate. It speaks of crossing the B&O Railroad on a steel viaduct, then
says "From here to Riverview loop, the line runs on turning, and twisting
single track PRW thru a narrow wooded valley. A favorite stop for many
motormen is a cool mountain spring located at track side in this section."
As we know, the track was double all the way beyond the crest of the hill at
Lanks, and the "cool mountain spring" was a bit of hyperbole. But the photo
is clearly of a car on single track, with an intermediate block signal
visible just behind. I can't read the number and don't know if the car is
inbound or outbound. In PRCo tradition, one of the car's dash lights is
burned out. The location would certainly fit the area near Mingo Falls
(which, incidentally, was one of the sites considered for the trolley
museum...I ran across the R/W map while looking for something else).

It was on the hill out of Finleyville to the south, about 2/3 of the way to
Lanks, I would guess.

So where is the spring? Its a long ride from Finleyville to Lanks,
Mingo, Crookham and Riverview.
