In yesterday's Pittsburgh Post Gazette, in the "ON THIS DAY" almanac
section, is the following:

Fifty Years Ago (Wednesday, June 25, 1952)
The Pittsburgh Railways Co. asked the Public Utility Commission
permission to put in a new trolley fare system designed to increase
trolley use and double the firm's earnings. Principal elements of the
new fare plan were an increase in straight cash fares from 17 to 20
cents, inauguration of "weekly permit cards" permitting reduced fares,
and lower-fare "area" rides to encourage short trip passengers.
