Greetings
In a non-electronic era, The Harmony Short Line bus system kept track of its
buses manually! On the very heavy New Kensington-Pittsburgh route (ex
West Penn, now PAT route 1/3 A). There was a dispatcher in both Pgh
and New Kensington terminals with a departure sheet. He pencilled in the
bus
# and time. Enroute, Harmony maintained phones on street poles enroute.
The driver would step off the bus, call in, and a phone operator or
dispatcher
would mark the sheet.
On long suburban lines into Pittsburgh North Hills, there were phones at
isolated garages where drivers reported (Wildwood, Warrendale, Oakmont)
as well as phones enroute. All of these phones were direct Bell private
lines. They perhaps had their roots with the West Penn IF WEST PENN HAD
PHONES.
In Winnipeg, the driver carried a time card and had to step off the bus to
have
his timecard recorded. These were still in use in the late l970's and may
still
be.
Interesting subject.
