I actually have 2- for this car:::::::
1958.09.21--1450--Last car on 60, 68, 69
(Day after abandonment); 62, 55.
1963.09.01--1450--"56 Finis:" (1.15 - 4.00 A.M.)
Very last car on 56.
INTERESTING ASIDE::::::: The text (Not photo caption) on pg.100 of
Volkmer's color books reads thus:::::::
"At 13.8-miles, Route 68 was Pittsburgh's longest streetcar run.
(Route 87-Ardmore was a close second, at 13.7-miles.) The last day of
service for Route 68-McKeesport via Kennywood was Saturday, September
20, 1958. A fleet of new Mack buses took over the next day, so
chartered car 1450 had the rails unto itself. The author chose the
1450 for the trip at Craft Avenue Carhouse, because it sported a fresh
paint job and with poor weather that day, it proved to be a wise
choice!"
The above makes it *sound* like it was a personal Volkmer fantrip -
but he didn't actually say it! The Sept--1958 PERC *Trolley-Fare* is
a one-page mimeographed page which simply states the following:::::::
"SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20th still stands as the last day of routes 60-68
operation. A PERC fantrip, to feature these lines, will be run the
following day. More details when the date is definitely fixed for
abandonment."
And what I presume to be the October *Trolley-Fare* (pg is garbled)
says this, presumably about the above fantrip:::::::
".......A stark observation during the trip: it was quite surprising
to note how quickly (in just 12 hours) the rails showed that they were
not being used any more. Take the wires down, and you would look and
wonder how many months (or years) since the last car passed that way."
Worked with Bill about 15-20-years ago on photo projects and what he
said and did raised some white flags and this seems more of the same
-- he tends to bend, twist, or just leave out pertinent facts. We can
all do that, I guess, but have learned to take what Bill says or writes
with a grain of salt.
All the more so after we here onlist found he had copied some of FWS3s
photos and posted them to Daves site as his own photos! But to Bill's
credit, he lists a PRMA charter on bottom of pg.81 (car 1664 - please
see below.)
> Car 1019 on Sunday June 14, 1959 (west end farewell)
1959.06.14--1019--Last PRMA West End trip:
26, 34/31, 30, 27, 21, 39, 47, 44, 42, 38, 38A, 35.
> Cars 1449 and 1431 on Monday (Labor day) September 7, 1959, or was it Sunday 6th?
This was possibly the NRHS Special Charter, not PERC, but don't know
the chapter. Have photos of this car dated Monday the 7th. This
could be possible as that might have been the Labor Day Holiday.
Is 1449 painted for the County Fair - Annie Oakley, Sky King and Penny,
Four Lads, Sept-3--7??
Best I can tell, this NHRS charter included 1273, 1431, 1449, and 1476
and they did the obligatory lines of Ardmore, Trafford, McKeesport,
Drake.
PERC did have a later charter with 1431 as follows:
1962.06.17--1431--"Rambling Trolley:" 8, 15, 13,
10, 77/54, 50, 48, 49, 39, 37, 38A, 38, 42.
> Car 1537 on Sunday July 17, 1960
1960.07.17--1537--7, 8, 10, 15, 21,
55, 58, 62, 64, 75, 77/54, 87, 88.
> Car 1664 Mohawk on Sunday August 27, 1961
1961.08.27--1664--"Mohawk Trolley:"
7, 44, 39, 8, 21, 50, 77/54, 48, 40.
