When I was there in 1957, I rode cars that had what I call cake-rust on
the window sills [layers of rust ] where if you tried ,a layer would
come off . This was on some of the lines that was doomed by the Point
Bridge replacement. I was told by a motorman that the worst cars on the
system were being transferred over to that division , so when
abandonment came , they stayed there , never to run again . Electrically
and mechanically , they ran fine , but the bodys were really bad looking
inside and out. Sad to see for me !! I made a point to ride that
division so I could see it all , some trips done at night . I had a
limited budget so took 8mm slides with the kooky movie camera I had . My
slide camera was a piece of crap that didn't take good pix at all , so
only took limited number . Going to Pittsburgh from Boston , my home at
the time , was expensive on a servicemans budget [was in the Coast Guard
] A return trip a year later proved to be the undoing of my 54 chevy
as on the way back the lights got dimmer and dimmer and I wisely pulled
off the Penn Pike in LANGHORN PA. and parked by a garage and slept in
the car . The next day , found the car dead and in need of a generator.
I had to wire home for that cost ! I never forgot the name of the town.
The money spent on extra reels of 8mm film was worth it . [I think ] I
would have made it home ok if that stupid generator had not conked out
!!
