Pittsburgh Rwys' 100, 1000's, and 1100's had air-operated
horizontal wipers as original equipment -- many of these
cars were retrofitted with swing-arc wipers about mid-life.
Each windscreen had a pair of two wipers which shuttled
back and forth. I never saw any of them work (in my mind,
anyway) satisfactorily -- there didn't seem to be enough
pressure exerted by the wiper on the glass. PRC resolved
the problem with a more conventional set-up on the 1200's.

In addition, Baltimore and Washington, DC, also retrofitted
their early PCC's -- and possibly other properties did also.

In Boston in days gone by , motormen used newspapers to wipe the
windshields of the cars as there was something in the papers that made
the rain run down the window in a smooth sheet and was eisier to see
thru . Hand operated windshield wipers were sop on most trolleys before
the PCCs . I will never forget in Pittsburgh seeing an old passenger
car converted to work car with HORIZONTAL WIPERS [2] swinging back and
forth across the windshield. Weird sight . never saw one like that.
