Maybe there simply wasn't enough imagination?????? The transit authority in York was
an after the fact thing. The local bus company ran out of money and shut down ...
judging by the paint scheme, they may have, at one time, been affiliated with City
Lines of West Virginia, and Penn Transit. A local school bus operator in Red Lion
stepped into the void and began running just enough trips so that people could get to
stores and the doctor ... those trips coming between 9 AM and 2 PM. Nice deal ... it
gave his school bus drivers an eight hour day or maybe more. Then YATA came in, got
federal money, told Red Lion he could send his school buses to hell, and took over.
I've not looked at the FTA web site but I suspect they probably get 20 cents on the
dollar from the farebox. And why so low you ask? Because the only service needed in
Pennsylvania is that that Red Lion was giving with school buses. Seniors ride free
between the morning and afternoon rush hours -- paid for out of the state lottery.
And in small cities, that is far more than half the business. So even if you can
charge enough for a profit on the cash fares, you still cannot exceed a 40% return
from the farebox!
