I guess the rule of thumb should be: if you really need a book, look around.
It's out there, at traditional outlets, at a reasonable price.  In 2000, I
bought a new copy of the the "Touring Pittsburgh"  book at the Colorado RR
Museum for $10.
Many rail museums also sell publications via mail order.
