I get any number of large (long to download) messages from known or unknown
people that, once they appear in my inbox, have a size of 1K. I'm presuming
that my anti-virus software is stripping the offenders from the body of the
message, though it doesn't brag about doing so.

If you just get virus checking software for your system, you're already
covered, and this fix sounds like urban legend anyhow.
But, this is a trolley list, not a computing list. If you want answers to
these things, there are other places that have experts (or at least people
with better answers)
