Or why it was named that.
There is one church in the town of Manheim, Lancaster County, built more than a century
ago on land they do not own. The ground rental each year is one red rose. There are
at least four Lancasters in the U. S., each with a different pronunciation. Lancaster,
PA is accorded the same pronunciation as the town in England after which it is named.
I remember calling Amtrak one day and asking for train information to Philly. I
apologized for not putting the PA on it, and she said "I know where Lancaster is." My
next comment was, 'Oh, you are in the Los Angeles center." She had given it away by
pronouncing Lancaster like she would the town in Los Angeles County on the SP.
