My least favorite story about a politician concerns a former township
commissioner ... I despised him in that job and I still do. When the two other
commissioners tried to jump on a band wagon to build a new stadium in this
township, and get some kickbacks for themselves, the goon in question played
goody two shoes and used it as a chance to run for a state representative's
position. After he won the seat, I was walking out of a drug store. He was
ahead of me with one of his friends. He had no idea I was behind him when he
told his friend, "I understand when I get to Harrisburg I'll never again need to
pay for lunch." He had just received a $6000 before tax raise thanks to the
lobbyists and he planned to enjoy every penny of it. And you all wonder why
I'm so damned cynical.

At any rate, may all of you have a wonderful new year. And because we are
mostly not young any more, may each and every one of you enjoy a year free of
surgery, diminished hearing and weakened eyesight, and all those other trappings
of the golden years. May you vacation where you wish. May your children do
those things that make us proud.
