I am happy to report that the ex WP company, Co-Operative Transit was not
presssured at all by NCL to convert to bus. A combination of worn out track,
and
poor maintainance of equipment during the war (although still basically
quite sound as of 1946, these were Jewett and Cincinnati cars) were part of
the decision to convert to bus. The riding public still liked the street
cars, but the primary decision was political, the city of Wheeling felt the
street car reflected "out of date" transportation, and they wanted them
gone. There was also some clamor by both the W Va and Ohio road commissions
that roads needed widened and the side of road operation had to move. So the
conversion was made.

It only took the states another 30 years to do something with the highways.
