[PRCo] Re: historical usgs maps redux

"Washington Interurban" wasn't around when either of the two quads were
surveyed! But the W&C was built to Canonsburg in 1902-03. The difference?
Claysville quad was surveyed 1904-05 and thus showed the car line. Amity
quad was surveyed 1901-02, so would have shown nothing of it.

I've been collecting USGS topographic sheets for 45+ years and have a lot of
the 15-minute sheets...wish I had more across the state. Franklin Maps (the
expensive folks in King of Prussia) used to have a vast inventory of these
as recently as maybe 4-5 years ago...then the government decided each one
was a liability (they will give you a new map free when you turn in the old
version, apparently) they didn't want [and at 4 maps for the one, I can
understand this] to be on the hook for replacements, so they gave map
dealers credit on a 1:1 basis as long as the dealers destroyed the stock.
Franklin took the money and ran. I'd probably have saved one of each, but
then again I'm not the average greedy map dealer.

Thank you, Derrick. I'll be "in conference" rest of the day. But so far,
found quite a few hints for future 'where did the trolley line use to go'
excursions.

Allentown & Reading shows up rather nicely, as does the original Hagerstown
& Frederick line. Likewise Lehigh Valley Transit lines and most of
Conestoga. Also found alignments for most of York Railway and Reading
Transit suburban lines.

Unfortunately, the maps are either too early or too late to show Hershey
Transit. Same for Harrisburg Railways and Johnstown & Somerset line to
Jerome. East end of Oley Valley doesn't show as was built after the
Boyertown quad was mapped, but west end shows up in Reading quad.

In Pittsburgh area, the Castle Shannon area is dated 1906. Pittsburgh &
Charleroi is shown as entering Pittsburgh via 38A and West Liberty Ave.
Looks like route 42 only entended to Neeld Ave. at that date. And looks
like Washington interurban extended only as far as Arden fairgrounds when
Claysville quad mapped.

Noticed that there is an option to switch to a small current topo map
section. However, one can also go to USGS and Topozone sites for these.
Looks like this will call for quite a bit of experimentation.

Hope you don't mind if I send this link to several other railfans with
possible interest in either PA or one of the other available northeastern
states.

Again, thank you for giving us a 'heads-up' on this sites availability.

John
