"North America" and "South America" - that's something entirely different.

"American" - universally - means a national of the USA and "America" means the 
USA. By "universally" I mean to everybody except Americans making an attempt at 
inclusivity. A Brazilian writing in English about the Organization of American 
States might refer to "the Americas," but if he/she wrote "Americans" it would 
be in reference to nationals of one and only one country.
