You're as bad a name dropper as I am!
You mentioned Felix Reifsnyder ... we worked for the transit system in Manila,
Philippines into the late 1930s or early 1940s. I'm not sure that he didn't
return to the states because of an illness. Felix worked as an engineer for the
Office of Defense Transportation during World War II, which explains the
statement about him shutting down a line in Wheeling. ODT regulations during the
war prevented conversion of rail properties to bus principally because of an
extreme shortage of rubber for tires. It was my understanding that gas rationing
in the war was created not because of fuel shortages but because of a lack of
natural rubber. I think Felix retired when the ODT was dissolved at war's end.
For those that don't know, Felix was a not too distant relative of Vincent
Seyfried who did all the Long Island books. And Vincent, in turn, married the
sister of Frank Goldsmith from Queens. Frank was for some years the president of
the Electric Railroaders' Association. (I have to think about where the
apostrophe goes so I don't enrage Ed. Lybarger.)
Another name you mentioned... Where is Bob Richardson now? I met him twice at
the Colorado Railroad Museum ... last time was about 1980. Maybe ten years ago
he popped into the Baltimore Streetcar Museum. We chatted. And he went home ...
to someplace in the mountains of Pennsylvania near State College. Bob had a lot
of western PA and eastern Ohio material (if he's still living). I think he lived
in the Youngstown area before moving to Colorado in the late 1940s.
