He has a lot of company raising grandchildren these days but not for the same
reason.  A kid from my high school class (we always remain kids)
just down the road is raising a 10-year-old granddaughter.  His son (the father)
and the girl friend wanted to abandon the child and Marty and his wife ended up
with the burden.  Then tends to have another affect ... you then disown your own
child.
