And it shows that the prevailing direction of the north end loop is counter
clockwise. The switch at Second and Putnam is set for a returning car. I
doubt that any railfans went there with a switch iron since 1930 and changed
it.
The track on Front Street was paved in concrete, and has been covered with
asphalt. There is no concrete base under the bricks on Putnam Street. A few
years ago I saw a utility crew working underneath the rails. And when they
were done, they dutifully rebuilt everything for the next streetcar.
Marietta is one of those towns you need to see to believe ... the college
keeps it most vibrant. There is no downtown to speak of but the old frame
homes are not slum houses today. They look no different ... well, maybe even
better ... than they did in the 1950s. I know my grandparents' home on
Washington Street has been considerable improved inside. But the downtown has
moved to a mall on the West Virginia side above Parkersburg.
And for those unaware of the tie ... West Penn Electric Company, the New
York-based holding company, owned Monongahela-West Penn Public Service
Company. Several years before the trolleys were abandoned, MWP sold off the
transportation business. City Lines of West Virginia converted the car lines
to bus, and sold off the freight tracks to the B&O.
