Having never ridden the C&LE, I'd forgotten about the area between Springfield
and Mount Healthy. The LVT, on the other hand, had a lot of grades with stops
at the bottom. The worst, without a doubt, was coming up to the Summit of
Lehigh Mountain immediately south of Allentown. That grade probably averaged
around 4% on either side for a length of up to two miles with stops on the
grade. I was told that, when the cars came into Fairview Carhouse in Allentown
for cleaning and servicing after each trip, the motor cases were so hot you
could fry eggs on them.
