For those who wondered, prayed, called or sent cards ... the beast is
rapidly recovering.  Odds were about 3 out of 4 that back surgery would
be a success and it seems that my surgeon beat the odds.  Have been
cleared to drive automobile for short distances (so far I've not tried
more than 50 miles in a day) .  (The doctors in that practice understand
that my idea of short is under 150 miles in a day.)  Have a new problem
and that is absentmindedly leaving my cane in some other room in the
house.  Totally off narcotic pain killers ... ibuprofin in large doses
works OK.  Suspect I'll drop that in another day or two.  Thanks to all
of you.
