Lewisburg or Lewistown??? Lewistown is in the Juniata River valley about 75 miles west of Harrisburg, and, by train, about 160 miles east of Pittsburgh. There is a Federal prison Lewisburg ... or more properly a country club where they house the white collar prisoners who are convicted of stock fraud and the like. I've been told that those people, unlike the murderers, even get to call out and have food brought in
Lewisburg was on a Pennsy branch; the Harrisburg to Buffalo "mainline" was on the other side of the Susquehanna River.
Remember when television in the United States was an evening only proposition? Lancaster had one of the few broadcast stations as early as 1950 and perhaps the only one between Philadelphia and Johnstown. WGAL-TV was an NBC affiliate and still is. We could get it, as well as ABC and CBS stations in Philadelphia. I'll never be able to put everything into perspective, except that I remember watching the live coverage of the sinking of the Andrea Doria on the "Today" show ... Dave Garaway, Jack Lescouli and J. Fred Muggs (I apologize for misspelling any of the names) were the leads in those days. And it occurs to me that the Doria sunk not too long after early morning television began.
And I know this has nothing to do with western Pennsylvania trolleys but I've enjoying this thread!
