Luggage racks lasted until 1960 and later as this is when PRCo
started replacing them with motorman's seats as they are wider
and shaped a little differently from the standard single
passenger seat. But seat base was welded and thus rendered
non-adjustable. This has been discussed here in detail before.
ALWAYS rode in the RailFan seat -- luggage rack -- unless
someone beat me to it, and then only in the rush hour when other
seats were gone. Looked down over the motorman and got a clear
view ahead!
On an early Sunday Pullout in 1960, papers were still delivered
via interurban. Isadore Reichert carried such on his pullout
and I was there to witness!

They didn't go immediately but were gone quite fast -- they
definitely did not last as long as the seats.
Pg.76 of Volkmers Pgh-Region-Trolleys shows 1716 on Grant to
Liberty on 1954.08.24 without spare pole -- you'll be hard
pressed to find a photo of interurban in 1954 with spare pole.
Something Boris and I discovered is that shock absorbers lasted
on the 16-series interurbans until ({[pat]}) -- and have some
photos in late 1950s and early 1960s with 16s and shocks.
Shocks disappeared from some 17s before 1953 and all 17s shortly
thereafter.
