Greetings
Therewere two interurban rail lines:
Pittsburgh, Harmony, Butler and New Castle Ry Co (Harmony Route)
Pittsburgh, Mars and Butler Ry (Butler Short Line)
They formed a bus subsidiary in 1926.
The Harmony Short Line Motor Transportation Co.
Rail abandoned in 1932
Later took over other bus lines such as Welsh Transportation
and expanded into Allegheny Valley Division replacing Wesr Penn
Rail & Bus owned by David I McCahill. RM Glick was Secty Treasurer
until final abandonment.
I worked at Harmony from 1951 to 1961.
After 1960 strike, McCahill abandoned the bus lines in 1961.
In post war years, they frequently had long summer strikes
at two year intervals.
Harmony was an early 100% GMC diesel operator.
Certificates were void. Other bus lines filed for new certificates.
The largest was Community Transit Service of Bridgeville who took over
routes in the Allegheny Valley. They first rented and then putrchased
the former West Penn carbarn in Tarentum. Pittsburgh Bus waiting room
was at 10th & Penn. Building still stands.
I became Manager of Community Transit in 1961 until takeover by
the Port Authority of Allegheny County in1964.
