It was. I first wandered around it in 1952 and early 1953. While the use of
low-floor cars had greatly diminished owing to ridership declines and the
abandonment of Millville routes, 34 Elliott, and 20 Manchester, most lines
were still using a few of the old yellow cars in the rush hours. All 666 PCC
cars were still in service. The three car stop signs were still used. And I
imagine that there could have often been 8 to 10 cars at one time in the
tunnel.
My interest rapidly waned as a result of the three labor disputes in the
1950s, which left the system just an empty shell of what it had been. It
seems after every strike they needed 100 to 200 fewer streetcars.
