When, a few weeks ago, I started getting hundreds of these messages daily I 
switched to vetting headers before downloading my mail - a habit that I have 
continued and which allows me to strip out spam at the same time. But the 
"Microsoft update" type messages have disappeared, presumably because my ISP is 
screening them out.

As to poor Boris's getting tarred: who knows how many messages may have gone 
out over my name just because somebody infected had me in his address book.
