Several years ago I collected the newspaper clippings on this (but have not
memorized them). Basically, the union members walked out after the feds
ordered the black operators hired. They claimed (for public consumption)
that the hiring interfered with their seniority system.

Wasn't the problem primarily the transit union objection? I don't have any
news articles on this episode, although a reference is mentioned in the 1944
index to the New York Times.
