We have two held for charters - TTC doesn't want them but the politicos
won't let them sell them off. There was supposed to be a "shed" built for
them at Russell CH to keep them away from the weather and idiots - that was
4 years ago and guess what hasn't been built yet? They live on Track 22 at
Russell Carhouse, the furthest from any employees working there.
Neighborhood people and postal employees (big distribution station right
behind the carhouse) walk through that end of the carhouse at all hours. We
have a minor graffiti problem in Toronto, but not on the streetcars, at
least the paint, per se (mostly glass scratching). How long that will last
is an unknown. The roll signs in the cars are covered with mold. That's
to prevent railfans from stealing them! Any time a good sign is installed
it disappears within days, sometimes hours., once within 30 minutes. Fred
and I had a private charter 15 months ago - one of the signs was taped so it
would stay in place, and it couldn't be changed.
On, and your color reference. No one there knows the proper color, at least
not when they were painted. All the rehabs in the last batch, these two
included, were more brown than red. Perhaps you're thinking of the days
from 1972-80 when they applied the brilliant subway red enamel on the cars.
At least they got the Peter Witt right when it was restored, but then Corley
was watching over their shoulders and he wasn't going to let it be screwed
up like the PCC color.
Next week (Friday) we have another movie shoot, this one with 2424 painted
in green. It's a temporary paint that is easily removed before they apply
the proper color and send it back to the museum.
Thus the lot of TTC's surviving PCCs.
