Your confusing nations with continents, Fred.
Last time I checked, these 48 states (+2) between Canada and Mexico were
called The United States of America. (somewhere I read that it was 'These'
United States prior to Civil War)
So it comes from the privilige of being the first to risk their future on
independence. Who knows: if what is now Canada had been first, perhaps
that nation to our north would be known as the 'United States of America'.
Or perhaps the 'United Provinces of America'.
