Actually Fred Keighley was one of Frick's competitors...the general manager
at one of the Oliver plants. The newspaper clipping I have reprinted one of
his speeches verbatim, but there was no angry crowd of locals involved. It
was just one of those things plant managers did to promote the industry.
The claims were pretty amazing, defining all the good that rained down with
the emissions from the ovens.

This particular captain of industry later took his own life after becoming
"financially embarrassed" as a result of some exotic deal.

Did EHL ever tell you the story of one of Frick's lieutenants being
confronted by local people who were angry / upset with all the smoke? He
gave the explanation that they should be happy with the smoke; that it goes
up in the air and then the rain washes it into
their gardens and fertilizes them. Ed could tell you who the man was.
