Use of a second man on these trips may have been necessary if the car went
over any railroad crossings. PUC General Order 5 specified either a
conductor or a deadman; that's what the one-man issue was all about in the
'20s and early '30s.

Coming back to this: presumably inductees are prepaid, so it's secretly a
one-man car anyway for this trip. Or, not so secretly. So, given that you
don't want to use these cars generally, why not knock off a few more miles
on them for a trip where you know you won't need a conductor?
