OK, we have a suburban line in Ostrava connecting large housing development
of Poruba with several small villages on the west and the far western
terminal is Budisovice-Kyjovice (it carries names of two villages). The line
is single track with two passing sidings and was opened in 1925 as a local
steam railroad. After WW2 it was entirely electrified and standard
streetcars took over the operation. Formerly it continued from Poruba to
railroad station in Svinov (Ostrava), but in 1969 due redevelopment of
transit infrastructures it had to be cut back to Poruba (the Svinov part
does not exist) and the resulting length is approx. 9 km.
Because of very bad track condition, reconstruction of track and overhead
started from the western end in 1980 and continued in several phases. In
1986 those rebuilt T2s (12 units) replaced the old standard cars due their
bad body condition, but that was only temporary and during the final years
of reconstruction (1989-90) all service had to be bustituted as the
reconstruction work had approached the Poruba terminal.
The line was opened again in 1990 and only standard equipment (T3 trains)
have been assigned to the route since that. The rebuilt T2s were used then
to serve only city lines (single cars), later mostly on night shifts. In
1995 and 96 we got rid of 8 cars and some of them are in Liberec now.
