I suspect multiple reasons:

- Young people tend to consider themselves indestructible.  That's why they 
make good soldiers.

- Others just like to show off to their friends.  Guess its called being 
'kool'.

- Others are fantasizing that they are NASCAR drivers.  And to bring this 
back to electric railways, Fred the third has good story of a railfan who 
fantasizes that he is accelerating a 'bullet' car.

Just some suspicions.
