Not born yet. Both of my parents were of high school age, and both went to
high school in Oakland. I don't know if school was in session that day. I
suppose on Thanksgiving I will ask them. In any case, school would have
still been in session, so I doubt either was on a streetcar (or a bus, I
think my mother said she usually used a Lincoln Coach) when it happened or
when they heard.
Oddly this question was on my mind anyway, as well as where they were when
Martin Luther King was shot. Last week I was in Atlanta for work, and I
visited his birthplace as well as his tomb (they're a block apart on
Auburn Avenue, about a mile east of the center of the city). The video in
the National Park Service-administered visitors center of his funeral
procession brought home that this happened only 5 years before I was born.
As a younger generation I suppose I've generally seen the world in a more
idealistic light than those you who who have lived through wars and severe
racial strife; Recent times have generally forced me to reconsider.
