I guess the fine people in Oregon would appreciate someone not wanting
to go there. There are too many people who like the climate. I've
been to Portland four times in the summer and it was sunny each and
every time. The hills to the west catch the coastal rains. Portland it
self has a moderate amount of rain. But go east of the Cascades and it
becomes pure desert ... sunny most of the time. And that is only 50
miles give or take from Portland. The proximity to the coast means
that summers are not oppressive and winters are cool, not chilling to
the bone like Chicago. Although I've never been as far north as
Juneau, AK, I suspect that much of the coast from San Francisco to
Juneau has a similar climate. I once worked with a man from Juneau and
he remarked, about the winters, some years we have rain and some we have
snow.
Might be a little scary, however, to be living in the shadow of Mount
Hood and wondering when it will blow. You can get some great
pictures with a 135 to 250 mm telephoto lens of the trolleys on the east
side with Mount Hood looming over them.

I like downtown Portland. The city is large enough that it has
attracted all manner of ethnicities and for someone who likes a great
variety of food, you'll find it there. Kosher breakfasts. Middle
eastern dinners. Oriental lunches. Mexican snacks. And even American
food. Fantastic part of the world.
