Speaking of teaching kids.......

We took our church's youth group to visit the Smithsonian on Saturday. Only
we did it my way.

Dropped the van at Greenbelt Metro station (free parking on weekends) and
then Metro to Union Station with the $6.50 day pass. This was the 'airport
terminal' of the early 20th century, except they don't build airport
terminals like this. The kids were impressed. Also basement food court was
a good location for eating bag lunches, which are not allowed in
Smithsonian.

After sampling couple of Smithsonian buildings, Metro to Thai restaurant at
King St. station in Alexandria. Lots of assorted ethnic restaurants on King
St. Then Metro back to Greenbelt.

First 'transit' trip for all the kids, and all favorably impressed by Metro.
And as Harold said - showed them that there was a 'world outside of school
buses' (and automobiles)

For those of us fortunate to grow up in Pittsburgh years ago(notice how I
slipped back to topic<g>), we knew that school buses were not the norm.

I went into a bit of detail in case others might want to consider a D.C.
visit.
