Interesting series of posts, Jim.
I walked through The Marina shortly after the following New Year - trolleys
were still limited to the short turn - and was quite amazed to see building
after building jacked up again and under repair. This after having sat
transfixed before the TV a few months earlier watching the devastation along
these same streets.
A note of irony: The Marina is built on land, much of it reclaimed, developed
after serving as the site of the Pan-Pacific Exposition of 1915 - an expo in
large part staged to celebrate the city's recovery from the 1906 earthquake and
fire.
