Interesting series of posts, Jim.

I walked through The Marina shortly after the following New Year - trolleys 
were still limited to the short turn - and was quite amazed to see building 
after building jacked up again and under repair. This after having sat 
transfixed before the TV a few months earlier watching the devastation along 
these same streets.

A note of irony: The Marina is built on land, much of it reclaimed, developed 
after serving as the site of the Pan-Pacific Exposition of 1915 - an expo in 
large part staged to celebrate the city's recovery from the 1906 earthquake and 
fire.
