On Spring Hill, in PRC days a green metal sand box was in the trolley loop
. Trolley motormen would get rock salt from it as needed for spreading on
the trolley steps. (No wonder remaining PCC's have a corrosion problem!)

Motormen used paper cups (about 32 oz. size) to get the salt. There was a
plastic cup holder attached to the motroman's platform just behind his seat.

Smaller, wooden versions of the salt boxes (also painted green) were located
along some streets on Spring Hill, but these boxes were maintaintained and
filled by the City.

I just returned from a week's business trip in warm Orlando, and you know
what - I prefer the cooler climate in the north! No kidding.

over the rear dual tires. Sand boxes were also located at bus loops and at
selected places along bus routes. Most likely all these sand boxes were left
over from streetcar days. Do PAT buses still have sanders?
