In the late 1950's, Chestnut Street (PRC routes 1 and 5) between E. Ohio St.
and Spring Garden Ave. had:
- Al's Barber Shop
- Hiegel's Bakery,
- Patsy's Tavern
- Another tavern at Tripoli St.
- A Grocerty store at Spring Garden Ave.
- A gasoline station at Peralta St.
On route 5-Spring Hill, Itin St. and Rhine St. were both curb-running
outbound. The retail stores served from the curb outbound:
- Hamm's Market (still there),
- Al's Shoe Repair Service
- Arbrogast's Pharmacy
- Miller's Bakery
- A hardware store at Haslage Ave. in 1956-57
- Ladesic's Tavern (still there, I think)
- Two Lutheran churches within 25 feet of each other at Walz St. (one of
them is still there)
- Miller's Meat Market (no connection with Miller's Bakery)
- Sukitch's Spring Hill Tavern (just south of the loop)
Lots of curb-running on 21-Fineview, including curb service to homeowner's
porches. See photo I took on April 23, 1966. It's at

Inbound, the trolleys ran on the left side of the streets.
