Went by way of Newark. While there was rusting due to salt on all the
Minneapolis cars, there was a lot of rust due to other causes such as water
seeping under the rubber roof mat and turning the steel roof into a sieve.
One would not expect a lot of salt damage on Shaker Heights or Newark, but the
cars do pick up salt from platforms and from road crossings. Stored in my
memory bank is a tale of woe from Bill Janssen when he worked as the Assistant
Master Mechanic of the South Shore. Snow plows in the winter would push snowy
salt or salty snow off the toll road in Gary. It would fall of their bridge and
land on the South Shore tracks. Bill claimed the CSS&SB spent an inordinate
amount of money overhauling traction motors because of salt ingestion.
Isn't it nice that we don't have that problem with our automobiles. We simply
get rid of them. It would be unAmerican to drive an old car.
