I generally remember PCC cars as being very reliable
and breakdowns were rare. Breakdowns and mishaps like
split switches became a little more obivous when
systems were replacing old equipment with new
equipment and maintenance was cut back or when the
decision to rebuild a fleet was pending.
The one general exception would be during heavy snow
storms when all hell could break out, anything from
broken trolley poles to derailed sweepers. But that
was rare and storms like those would shutdown a whole
city.
