The following was posted on the PCC_Cars Yahoo group
today.
Bill Robb
"The Riverfront and Canal streetcars are both housed
at the A. Phillip Randolph Operations Center (ie Canal
Station) in New Orleans. Both groups of cars were
flooded in the carbarn from Hurricane Katrina and will
have to be overhauled before they run again. It is my
understanding that the Riverfront cars have the Czech
equipment along with the protype Canal car while the
rest of the Canal cars have the Brookville equipment.
All of the St. Charles cars, including work car 29 and
deck roof car 953, are housed at the Carrollton
Station. The Carrolton Station and Shops had no flood
waters but the surrounding streets had water. The St.
Charles trackage had water near Canal Street and at
the Carrollton Terminal. Additionaly, the St. Charles
overhead will have to be repaired as the center track
steel supported backet arms at numerous locations were
knocked down by falling branches from the many large
trees that line St. Charles.
Thus, it will be some time before streetcar service is
restored in New Orleans, especially with most of the
city having been evacuated (and nearly all homes
flooded) and no tourists.
