PRCo TrolleyCars had a transfer stand that would hold 3 books vertically
with a pouch below to hold collected transfers. On the back of the
stand was a pantograph that worked horizontally so the motorman could
position the stand for ease - fore, aft, left, right. Have one of
these stands - weighs a ton by standards today!
Usually saw only two books in the stand at a time -- having Inbound,
Outbound Transfers and a book of Specials might be confusing and the
wrong one would be torn off -- Usually just Inbound and Special.
Once into the trunk area the Special would be replaced by Throat.
Smithfield Cars went from inbound to outbound on Smithfield at 7th
except for the 44 which did so after leaving the PRR station; Grant St.
TrolleyCars changed from IB to OB at the turn from Grant to Liberty.
The motorman would ring up each cash fare using a rope pull to an
International Fare Register located to the left of the front destination
sign -- it had 3-digit large numbers on top for current count, a
window for In or Out, and 5-digits of small numbers across the bottom
for cumulative total of fares on the register. When the motorman
went from inbound to outbound he would take a reading for fares
collected and then clear the register which would then set it up for
Outbound. Use one of these as a decoration on a bookshelf!!
The 1200s and all/some 1100s had an electric fare register that just
recorded total fares with five medium large digits -- this was located
just below the ceiling immediately behind the front doors. A
toggle as part of the dash gang switches activated the register.
All/Most/Some of the electric registers in the 1100s were replaced with
the pull cord variety. I used one of these as a doorbell for a while!!
Motorman had a form which had to be turned in at the end of the day when
cash was returned which was issued for making change - this form would
include information about Transfers // Specials issued, collected, and
fares Inbound and Outbound and passes sold (like Sunday) in addition
to other information. Cash in the fare box was counted separately
and was removed when the car returned to the barn for the day --
several motormen probably operated the same car at various times.
The motormen kept their change in a Strong Box which slid onto a tray to
the left of the motorman on the air-cars -- padlock held it firmly in
place. On the 1700s there was a slot for the same in the front dash.
