Jerry:

Let me explain a little device called a Motorman's Friend. It was a
leather pouch with straps to hold it to the operator's leg, and an
opening at the top through with a certain male appendage was inserted
at the beginning of the shift. It could be emptied when a convenient
place was found.

I've never actually seen the advertisements for the Motorman's Friend
but I have been assured that they were sold in the industry.

I can also assure you that interurban motormen then, just as bus
drivers today, knew all the restaurants and dives where they could
run and and run back out. And if necessary, you had to stop and
inspect the trolley pole out in the woods.
