As I recall, DOS evolved from QDOS which stood for Quick and Dirty  
Operating System by its designer who ultimately took the business  
away from IBM and formed Microsoft.

And DOS worked.   I had trouble getting used to Windows.   I liked  
typing DISKCOPY A: B:.   I knew the old commands.
