Spotting TrolleyCars in South Hills yard was a very
labor intensive job. As TrolleyCars pulled into the Main yard
(tracks 1-6) they were facing south but We Know that many TrolleyCars
on these tracks faced north, witness the photos below:::::::

AM pull outs for all but the 38, 39, 42, and 43 lines
had to face north; these 4 lines exited the yard heading south near
Palm Garden in the AM. SHY yard crews turned the south facing
TrolleyCars and spotted them on the correct tracks for AM pullout.
.
.
.
Tracks in SHY West Yard (Main Yard) were numbered
from east to west with tracks 1 through 6 outside, 7-13 inside and track
14 looping the outside of these buildings. Tracks 1 to 6 merged
into track 15 heading south except for track-2 which was stub ended
---- in later PRCo days some work equipment was kept on the back of
track-2 with a few PCCs ahead. Tracks 8-13 turned east coming out
of the south end of the building except track-11 which was stub
end. Track-7 both merged into track-6 as well as making an
westbound turn which then forms a wye. Track-6 has a westbound
turn at this location to form another wye in conjunction with
track-6! This is shown in the enclosed URL at the bottom as well
as the Palm Garden and East side yards. These drawings are NOT
to scale but were developed to show storage capacity ---- 169
TrolleyCars could be stored in South Hills. The following photo
shows the back of the Main Car House buildings where the dual wyes were
located:::::::

After the 1953 cutbacks of the Interurbans to Library
and Drake, the 1601-series PCC Interurbans were used for rush hour
trippers Only and did not see All Day Service and were stored in the
East Yard. Yardmen directed PullIns onto tracks so that the yard
crews could then take the 1601-series Interurbans and other cars to the
East Yard by continuing through to track 15, out on the Main, then into
the Palm Garden Loop and up track 23 where cars could be backed into
tracks 24 through 29.
.
http://www.davesrailpix.com/pitts/htm/jfp106.htm ---- Lower East
Side of SHY. These tracks *_Suggest_* that some of the East Side
Stub tracks 24-29 in the 1954 drawing were built through to track 23
near Palm Garden so it wouldn't be necessary to back the TrolleyCars
onto all these tracks.

.
http://www.davesrailpix.com/pitts/htm/rhp084.htm ---- North end of
East Yard.
.
.
.
After the cars had been moved to the East Yard some city
cars were stored facing south to pull out for the 38, 39, 42, and 43
lines like in the following URL:
.
http://www.davesrailpix.com/pitts/htm/bvp132.htm
.
Once cars were stored on track 15, any remaining cars to
go to the East Yard would need to be backed off the Main Yard ladder
onto the main line, then head south to Palm Garden Loop!!
.
TrolleyCars to be stored on tracks 1 to 6 for a
northbound pullout or to be spotted for service inside were then backed
onto the ladder track and either taken directly inside or were wyed or
looped via track 14 to track 6 and back to the ladder, then backed down
tracks 1 to 5 to face northbound!!! Cars going inside for service
could also be backed onto the ladder, then take track 6 south and loop
to one of the inside tracks!!!
.
.
.
Tracks 16 through 20 inside Palm Garden Loop generally
held work cars and cars needing service. PCC Interurban 1716 was
the first to lose its Earll Interurban retriever (to be replaced with a
simple city catcher) and sat on one of these tracks for many months
before the modification was made. Tracks 21 and 22 may have been
part of the connection to Warrington for the 38 and 39 lines.
Several work cars were generally stored here.
.
http://www.davesrailpix.com/pitts/htm/bvp102.htm ---- tracks may
have been renumbered for the 1954 drawing as track-16 (apparently shown
here) is the furthest storage track on the east inside Palm Garden
Loop ---- here track-16 appears much closer to the main.
South Hills Yard saw much realignment of trackage from inception until
1954!!!

Interurban 1616 backing onto the Riverview Loop (for the Donora cars)
and wye for this tripper from Pittsburgh!!! Pole has already made
it through the directional frog!! The loop made an elongated
siding -- prior to installation of the leg to make the wye the
northbound cars to Pgh. would come up the track on which 1616 is
sitting -- the other track of the loop is far to our left in this photo.
