Like me, you were probably too young to recognize what was happening
in the 1950s. The golden calf had already been slaughtered.
Pittsburgh's prime ended in 1949 when we caught up to the post World
War II demand for goods and then the slow decline began. Remember
in the early 1950s how people used to remark that the Japanese and
Germans were good copiers and immitators? And then in 1953 the
Germans began dumping those silly looking Beetles on us. Most of us
just didn't understand what was happening at the time. Now we
know. The smoke was terrible but the best years for Pittsburgh
might just have been 1942-1948. Everyone who wanted a job had one,
and good jobs at that.
