Good Morning!!!!!!!

PRCo 1630 was a modestly different 1601-series PCC being equipped with
fans and thus roof monitor to house those fans by the builder, St. Louis
Car Company ---- the fans were not added by PRCo (In Fact -- it
was just the opposite -- PRCo eventually removed those fans -- and
roof monitor!!!)

I included a few 1630 photos in recent days -- Another [One, two,
several -- donut know yet] is // are included With This Email so
there is an URL at the bottom of the page.

PCC 1630 was apparently first assigned to Highland Car House when new
-- first URL below shows a popular photo of this car on the ladder
track at Highland. Car 1630 was delivered to PRCo on the 18th of
September 1945 (eggzactly 2-weeks later than 1627 and 1629, 12 days
later than 1628 and After cars 1631--1642 were delivered) and was
placed into service 4-days later -- 22__September__1945.
http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp184.htm -- shows 1630 at the 71-
and 73-lines terminal!

While both Highland and Plummer St. Car Houses closed at the same time,
PCC 1630 was *-apparently-* transferred to Plummer for a brief
period. Photos exist of the car on the 94 line (*-could-* be
fantrip) but have seen info elsewhere that indicates this transfer is
probably correct. But by 1954 1630 was transferred to South Hills
where it remained. PCC 1630 was often assigned to the 42-Dormont
so I had ample opportunity to ride it.

FIRST____Charter:::::::
PCC 1630 was involved in two different charters, the first being::

1957.03.17 1630 PRCo Last PRMA trip on 1, 4, 5.

http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp185.htm -- destination sign reveals
the possible charter but photo caption says 21-Fineview -- This
Could Be -- but outer end of 4-line was single track with one passing
siding and loop. Maybe Ed, Bob or someone else could positively
identify this URL. Charter probably included other lines than the
1, 4, and 5 ---- would be an extremely short charter
otherwise!!!!!!! Note the Weather Guards installed by PRCo over
the screens in the roof monitor.

http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp318.htm -- 1630 at 4-Troy
Loop. Could one of those children be Bob Rathke??!!

The 94 destination sign I have seen on some photos *-could__be-* on
this fantrip as well. The 1- and 5-lines shared trackage with the
94 along Liberty and Penn between 16th and downtown and we know how
railfans are about setting destination signs to fool others!

This on on the 27 line::
http://tinyurl.com/chpc9
.......is seen from the opposite direction in::
http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp186.htm -- in both of these photos,
1630 is heading outbound and has just passed under the PRR overpass.

http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp192.htm -- 1630 at Sheridan loop in
the West End. Date is same as the 1-, 4-, and 5-lines charter
listed above.

http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp195.htm -- probably as the charter
in 1957 started from South Hills.

http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp194.htm -- can not explain this
photo unless it is a regular route assignment from South Hills!!!

The second URL at the bottom shows 1630 as a tripper on the Library
line at Latimer OB. One of the PCC books indicates that 1630 was
to receive the B3 trucks from 1648 after the Homewood fire -- don't
remember this happening but wish it would have!!

The Third URL shows 1630 on the 38A in Castle Shannon.

SECOND____Charter:::::::
1961.04.16 1630 PRCo "East End:" 82, 77/54, 67, 65, 56, 98,
55, 64, 87, 62.

This second charter for 1630 was after the car had its fans and roof
monitor removed -- this happened some time in 1960 or 1961.
Because many 10s and 11s were scrapped at this time PRCo apparently
salvaged one of these trolley cowls and placed it on 1630 along with an
Air Scoop forward but not aft. (*-It Has Been Reported-* that
this 1100-style trolley cowl is the reason ({[pat]}) rejected the
car.) PRCo even overhauled the car electrically // mechanically
and gave it a very nice paint job ala the 1700-series -- even at a
time when it was abandoning the same for the solid red dash -- Even On
Some 17s!!! The 4th URL at the bottom shows this very nicely
---- an utterly Handsome // Beautiful Car -- PRCo winged Logo sets
it off Very Nicely As Well!!!!!!!

http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp198.htm -- 1630 enroute to
Trafford (O-R coming back from same!!)

http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp197.htm -- 1630 on the charter
making the 62 Trafford Loop. The Trafford line was originally
worked by Double End Jones Low Floor Cars. This trackage to form
the loop was built between the PRCo 62 line and the West Penn line to
Trafford. The switch to complete the loop was already in place
where WP met the PRCo Trafford line -- it was this line where WP ran
freight cars into Pittsburgh!

http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp196.htm -- 1630 heading toward Pgh.
on Trafford line.

http://206.103.49.193/pitts/htm/wvp193.htm -- another view like above.

http://lists.dementia.org/files/pittsburgh-railways/Trafford%208-23-59.jpg
-- this is Not 1630 but rather PCC Interurban 1646 taking the 62
Trafford loop in the reverse direction ---- Leave It To
Railfans!!!!!!! Cars 1646 and 1630 would be nose to nose in the
photo of 1630 on the loop above!!! The WP Trafford connection can
clearly be seen in the foreground and the alignment of the track behind
1646 would be the same as for the WP including the switch cut into the
PRCo Trafford line. Don't know how much of it was rebuilt by PRCo
-- possibly all up through the turnout since it would have been quite
aged when the loop was completed. This is an PRMA Charter:::::::

1959.08.23 1646 PRCo 10, 13, 15, 18, 19, 50, 55, 56, 62, 64,
65, 77/54, 87.

Certainly not an exhaustive study of PRCo 1630 but quite an interesting
one All On The Inet!!!!!!!
