These were cars that dumped material such as ballast and fill along (or on,
in the case of bottom dump models) the track. They were manufactured by
Differential Car Company of Findlay, Ohio.

Excuse my lack of maintenance vehicle knowledge, but what is a
differential dump? I am guessing it was a vehicle used to spread
ballast on private right of way?
