Had I been originating a report on PTM's open houses to attract new
volunteers, I would have waited at least until they were all over, and
probably for a week or so until I saw how many people had actually signed up
as a result. But since Fred took it upon himself to announce them to the
world, an update is required at this point.
The Saturday open house yesterday brought twelve more attendees, three or
four of whom actually joined the museum on the spot (none of Tuesday's
people did this, to the best of my knowledge). One is scheduled to start
Monday in the shop; I am having an orientation in two weeks for three folks
who want to work in the Archives.
A total of 25 people came as a result of the publicity in the four
newspapers...a truly outstanding turnout. It reminds me of the sales
expertise my father had (he was an electrical engineer by profession)..."You
have to ask them to buy." It is sometimes easy for the sales department to
miss that message because marketing too often becomes cluttered with
technology.
What other railway museum has done anything like this? I'm eager to learn
what more we can do.
Ed

Scott Becker at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum deserves a little pat
on the back ... after George Tucker's funeral he started thinking
that too many of our people are dying and we need new blood. He
staged an open house last weekend to try to get new people. I'm
told we got 13 nibbles ranging in age from 15 or 16 up to 75 which
skills ranging from operators through an auto body worker to a civil
engineer. Scott also managed to get articles in three newspapers in
advances of the open house. You guys might want to pull up the
piece on the fellows at the museum that appeared in the Washington
