Following on the previous, non-Pittsburgh, non-western Pennsylvania  
thread, some of you might like to look at the URL below.
Little Rock had three pseudo-Birney cars built by Gomaco.   These  
were the same cars that were also built for Tampa, Charlotte and  
Memphis.   Now Little Rock has ordered two more.    Pseudo, by the  
way, in my mind, because they have no safety car control.   We have  
forgotten that if a motorman has a stroke or a heart attack that a  
car should stop itself.  One of the nice things about these cars is  
the relay valve in the air system.   There are very tiny pipes from  
the air brake valve to the relay valve on the air brake cylinder,  
which allows incredibly fast brake applications and releases compared  
to cars built in the teens and twenties.   They also have self- 
lapping valves, which makes it much easier to make smooth stops,  
which is something no Birney car on the planet ever had (cost too much).

But they look nice.
