If any of you like to keep up on what is going on in the transit
industry from day to day, I would recommend you send an e-mail to
Peter Folger at <transitman at gwi.net> and ask to be kindly included on
his distribution list of newspaper URLs that he sends out every few
days. Reproduced below are just a few examples of perhaps 30 or 40
that were on todays mailing from Peter. I don't know where he gets
the time to read newspapers from all over the country but, as far as
I;m concerned, he provides an incredibly valuable free service
keeping me up to date on what;s happening out there generally within
24 hours after it takes place. He has even sent out railfan
obituaries in time for me to make the funeral!
The first URL below is an editorial from Toronto on using streetcars
as a traffic calming device. The next is from Excelsior, Minnesota
on the charming 19th century single truck museum car that the
Minnesota Trolley Museum runs. The third URL is a classic example of
NIMBYs at work ... we want the trams but build the carbarn in someone
else's back yard ... that URL comes from London, England. The
fourth URL relates to light rail construction in Phoenix AZ. The
next one is from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review ... gee whiz guys,
we're going to put off a fare increase as long as we can. And the
final one comes from St. Louis ... all about jammed buses because of
high gas prices.
Today's list also includes a piece from Salt Lake City on expanding
Trax, a proposal on bringing trolleys back to Allentown PA (are we
kidding?), a proposal for trolleys on Charles Street in Baltimore,
If any of you want to see all of Peter's list from today, send me an
e-mail and I'll forward it.
But if you're into what's going on today, I would strongly suggest
you get to know Peter. Send him an e-mail and ask to be added to
his list. He is, by the way, a long time member of Seashore.
